Rattan or rattan core is a type of material that can be used for various functions. Rattan is known as one of the oldest natural material for furniture. Other than furnitures, rattan can also produce items such as handicrafts and accessories. Rattan is similar to bamboo in some way, but they have a slight difference. Rattan vine is more solid than bamtoo, which is more hollow.
Rattan comes from a tree that is the relative of tropical palm trees that grows mostly in tropical rainforests. Rattan can be found easily on the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and mostly eastern Asian countries. This vine like plant can grow both single or multi stemmed. Some species can grow up to several hundred feet long. The leaf bases have spines which can grow vertically up a tree with the help of the whips. It starts to grow upwards like a tree but then can and sometimes does bends back down to the ground. The core of the long stem is what is used in the manufacture of rattan products. Once the rattan vines have many years of growth they are cut down to between 12 and 18 feet and is put aside to dry. Rattans can also be peeled in thin pieces for weaving process. Sometimes the curved outer layer can be used as a decorative trim.
Nowadays, rattan furniture is very popular for both indoor and outdoor use. The advance technology makes it possible to weave different sorts of colors, instead of the natural color. The designs are pretty amazing also. Handicrafted products from rattan is known to have a high value in art, so if you are the type of person who appreciates artistic value, rattan is the perfect material you should find.
