Because it is commonly found in Southeast Asie, rattan wicker furniture is usually referred to as Indonesian furniture. Unlike bamboo, rattan has a solid core that is very durable. To make it pliable it is steamed. The pieces are then bent into the desired shape which they retain on drying. The joints in such furniture are wrapped with peel or even leather bindings. The wicker weaving on the core can be done using a variety of materials.
