The activity of Jepara wood carving was been initiated since the 7th century, when Jepara (which was named Kalingga Kingdom at that time) was ruled by Queen Shima. The kingdom specialized in making traditional ships and houses that were known throughout the land. At that time, the carving design was still traditional designs that were self created. In the 16th century, when Jepara is ruled by Queen Kalinyamat, much improvements were made to the design of the ships and houses. The designs were adopted after being influenced by design styles from China, India, Arab and Europe. It was since that era the revolution in Jepara wood carving design has been developing.

On the 19th century, the development of Jepara wood carving and furniture industry reached it’s climax and became famous in many countries all over the world after R.A Kartini, the daughter of Jepara Head Residence introduce the wood carving products from Jepara to the Queen Wilhelmina on her marriage. R.A. Kartini also introduce Jepara wood carving through Oost en West Organization that helped on the market place. Another way how R.A Kartini introduce the wood carving is by sending it to her friends in Holland.

On the 20th century when Soeharto become a President of Indonesia, Jepara Furniture Home Industry get a support from the President’s Wife to get the investor to expand their business and as a result, many foreign investor interested to expand their business to Jepara. Then the Europe design is dominate the production of Jepara Carving Furniture up to now.

How to Preserve Teak Wood Patio Furniture

Teak is the wood of choice for many individuals and manufacturers because of its’ high natural oil content that makes it resistant to weather, water, sun and other outdoor elements that can rot and destroy other wood species. Teak is a close grain hardwood that also resists warping and insects and due to its durability, it has been used in boat manufacturing for hundreds of years. Take the above factors and add the fact that it is also a beautiful wood that requires little or no maintenance it is easy to see why it is a top choice. Caring for teak patio furniture can range from doing nothing and allowing the sun to age the wood naturally to a silver gray color to treating and sealing the wood every 6 to 12 months depending on the environmental conditions where you live. This article takes you through the steps of cleaning and treating teak to maintain its golden brown color. Keep in mind however that even treated teak will turn silver gray from the suns UV rays after treating and sealing unless it is done on a regular basis.

There are a number of products available today that contain pigments, ultraviolet light blockers or absorbers, mildewcide, and moisture protection to seal and protect in one step. I recommend a visit to a local marine store as teak is used on boats and they can be an excellent source of information on teak sealers. As mentioned above, teak is a beautiful wood and with proper care can look great for years.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

* Teak sealer

* Scotch Brite Pad or brass wool

* Teak clear coat

* Liquid Ivory soap or another mild neutral ph detergent

* Sponge

* Soft bristle brush

* Soft cloths

* Nylon, polyester or foam paint brush

* 320 grit sandpaper

* Drop cloth to protect area under furniture during cleaning and sealing

* If the mildew stains are persistent, a mixture of chlorine bleach or ammonia in weak solutions with water or mildew products such as Tilex or X-14.

* NEVER MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA TOGETHER.

Step 1

If you are sealing new teak I recommend allowing it to sit in the sun for about a week to open up the wood grain. At this point a cleaning with a mild detergent and sponge should be all that is needed prior to applying the teak sealant. Allow the wood to dry completely, usually overnight.

Step 2

Brush on the teak sealer with a paint brush or spray on. Rub the sealant in with a soft cloth. Be sure to coat all areas of the furniture including the top, bottom, sides and between all slats. Allow the first coat to dry completely before putting on a second coat. Areas such as table tops that are susceptible to stains from foods, drinks or other items that can penetrate the sealer should be sealed with a teak clear coat. Keep in mind that teak has natural oils that come to the surface that will cause varnish, polyurethane and water sealers to bubble, chip and peel. Therefore, always use a “teak” clear coat.

Step 3

If your teak patio furniture has already started to turn silver-gray and you want to return it to its original golden brown or honey color, you will first have to clean the wood prior to applying the teak sealant. Begin by cleaning the wood as in step one above. If mildew is present try to clean with a soft bristle brush and liquid Ivory soap. If the mildew stains are persistent, a mixture of chlorine bleach or ammonia in weak solutions with water or mildew products such as Tilex or X-14 can be used. Whenever using bleach or ammonia to clean the wood always rinse quickly with plenty of water to avoid the wood turning white. NEVER MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA TOGETHER. There are also two part teak cleaners available that use a caustic soda and an acid to produce excellent results.

Step 4

After cleaning, allow the wood to dry completely. Lightly sand the surface of the wood with 320 grit sandpaper. Remember to always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Use a clean dry cloth to clean any sanding dust. The wood is now ready to re-seal. Follow Step Two above and you are ready to enjoy your furniture again.

Staining and preserving

Teak does not need to be protected. It is a unique wood that if left in its natural state, is virtually maintenance-free. Teak can be left outside year round, surviving even the most extreme weather conditions. Therefore, teak is often considered the gold standard for outdoor furniture.

Over time untreated Teak furniture which is exposed to the sun will patina and turn a silvery, grey color. This process is cosmetic and does not harm the strength or quality of the wood.

Teak sealer is often recommended to preserve the natural honey color or to darken the color of the wood. Teak sealer contains UV protection to keep the sun from graying the furniture as well as a fungicide to prevent the growth of mold and mildew on the surface of your furniture. Teak sealers can be applied to new teak or old teak furniture after it has been cleaned. Sealer is not the same as varnish. It is meant to preserve the color of the wood and is breathable, letting the natural oils escape without bubbling or peeling like varnish. Sealers and preservatives serve both as protectants and stains. Generally, the darker the stain, the more sun protection it provides, and the less often it needs to be reapplied. For furniture with an ageing varnish that is peeling, cracking or bubbling, it is recommended that you sand this finish off and use a teak sealer or just let the teak stay bare.

Applying the preservative is straightforward. On the first application, the wood should be allowed to stand in the sun for a week or two to allow the wood grain to open. A coat of teak sealer should be sprayed on and rubbed in with a rag. Two coats should be applied in this manner, to all surfaces, top, bottom, sides and between any slats. The area underneath the furniture should be protected with a drop cloth or newsprint as most sealers will stain concrete. After the first application, teak sealer should be reapplied every year by cleaning the wood with mild detergent and water and spraying and rubbing in a coat only on the surfaces that get sun.

After the furniture is sealed, very little care is needed to preserve the finish. Occasional washing with soap and water will remove normal soil. Oils from foods, wine, coffee and some condiments will penetrate the sealer and may leave a stain. To avoid this, a teak clear coat can be applied to the table top to improve stain resistance.

Teak is protected by its own natural oils that migrate to the surface of the wood and make the wood virtually impervious to water. As such, the use of varnish, water sealers, and oil on Teak furniture is not recommended. Products such as varnish and polyurethane will peel and chip and are difficult to remove without vigorous sanding. Oiling teak will not prevent the wood from graying,and often results in mold and mildew growing on the furniture (which usually shows up as black dots or patches.) Removing mould and mildew on the surface will require washing the furniture with bleach and soap followed by sanding.

Restoration

To clean weathered teak, a two part cleaner consisting of a step involving a base such as caustic soda and a step involving an acid, such as phosphoric acid. This product is easy to use and will produce dramatic results. First remove the piece from any finished surface or remove any items that might be affected by the cleaning process. Teak cleaner will not hurt the lawn or fiberglass but it may damage painted surfaces or stain a patio, always wear rubber gloves and goggles when using this type of cleaner. Using a hose, wet the wood thoroughly. Open the applicator lid of the first cleaner. It is best to work on a small area at a time, overlapping each area and working from top to bottom, not allowing the cleaner to dry on the wood. Scrub the base with a Scotch Brite pad or a soft bristle brush, the wood will turn a deep brown color. Rinse thoroughly, then apply the acid to the same area and scrub in the same fashion, the wood will then turn much lighter. Finally rinse the area thoroughly with water, the teak should appear obviously lighter and cleaner, if any stains remain repeat the process. The wood will lighten further as it dries.

Teak cleaner will remove teak oils, food stains, the residue of varnish, and teak sealer. Any solid surface coating like varnish must be removed before using two-part cleaner. Never use a brass brush or a pressure washer to clean teak, these methods will scour the soft grain of the wood causing a rough and splintery surface. Never use steel wool to clean teak because it will produce rust spots in the wood. Brass wool is acceptable but a Scotch Brite Pad is the best tool to clean teak.

Once the gray pigmentation and stains are gone and the furniture piece is dry, sanding any roughness of the grain can make the furniture seem just like new again.

When it comes to outside deck furniture, teak cannot be beat as far as superior quality and beauty. Teak deep seating, along with chairs, dining sets, etc. are a worthwhile investment. For those unfamiliar, teak is one of the most durable hardwoods from southeast Asia that’s naturally resistant to rotting, cracking, warping and infestation due largely in part to the natural resins it produces.

Teak deep seating is like most outdoor furniture, with the unique characteristic of having low, wide seats complemented by waterproof and tear-resistant cushions. It is more comfortable than sitting on straight wood, especially for individuals with lower back problems.
